THE SHORT ANSWER

pH describes acidity or alkalinity. It does not tell you whether water is free of harmful contaminants, and a higher pH is not automatically a health upgrade. Choose treatment around verified water conditions and your needs.

pH is one measurement, not a report card

The familiar pH scale describes how acidic or alkaline water is: 7 is neutral, lower values are acidic, and higher values are alkaline. That number does not list the substances in the water or establish that it is safe to drink.

A clear glass and an attractive pH result can still leave important questions unanswered. Ask what was actually measured and what the test was designed to establish.

What the EPA range means

EPA’s secondary drinking-water guidance lists a pH range of 6.5–8.5. Secondary guidance addresses issues such as taste, staining, and corrosion rather than acting as a universal health score. A pH reading alone cannot establish compliance with drinking-water safety standards.

Higher is not automatically healthier

Mayo Clinic states that alkaline water is not better than plain water for most people, and that evidence does not establish the broad health claims often made for it. People with relevant medical conditions should discuss special drinking-water choices with their clinician.

What to ask when comparing water systems

If a system includes a remineralization or pH-related stage, ask why it is proposed, what the manufacturer says it does, and how it changes maintenance. Separate taste preferences from medical promises.

For a North Port home, a useful treatment discussion includes the supply, the measured concern, and the selected model. We would rather help you understand the choice than sell a bigger number.

This guide is educational. Specific treatment recommendations require appropriate water information and an assessment of your home.
